1. Going to the Park.
Whether you have a child or not, the park is a great way to find relaxation. Now that my daughter is interested in everything and walking around everywhere, the park has become a pretty regular place for us. Even if she's more interested in the wood chips over the slides for the time being.
2. Walk or run in your neighborhood.
Running is a vital part to my week. It is great exercise and a perfect stress reliever. Starting out can be a challenge but once you get over the hump, running will be something you look forward to.
3. Window shopping.
The mall has also become a pretty regular place for us and you don't have to have a child to find it relaxing. We walk around the mall without spending a dime usually once a week. People watching provides entertainment at any stage in life.
4. Kick back and relax in the front or back yard.
Studies have shown that being outside is good for your overall health. Take a moment and enjoy the world around you. See how many specific sounds you can hear or observe the people walking or driving by.
5. Stacking stones.
Maybe it is just me, but finding flat rocks to naturally balance on top of each other is extremely therapeutic. It is an art of thought and discipline, which can be good if you want to take your mind off of the stresses life brings.
6. Read a book or magazine.
You know how the phrase goes, "Readers are leaders." Since having a baby, it has become a challenge to find the time to read. The book 1984 has been sitting on my nightstand for three weeks now and it still goes untouched. But, if you aren't totally beat at the end of the day, reading a book is a great way to relax and step away from reality.
7. Pick up a pen and some paper.
If you have a lot on your mind, writing it all down on paper can be a relief. Getting the thoughts out can ease the tension those thoughts are causing while providing a sense of accomplishment.
8. Close your eyes and breathe.
Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth, repeat. You can try this for one minute or five, either way, taking time to focus on breathing will aid in easing tension.
9. Lie on your back and caress your stomach.
This might sound weird but I'm telling you, it is extremely relaxing. Growing up my mom would caress my back and I LOVED it, who doesn't?
10. Listen to music with headphones.
Sometimes all it takes is music and headphones to block out the busy world around you. Typically I wear my headphones while I run to provide double the relaxation. You don't necessarily have to listen to peaceful music to relax, hip hop or dance music can be relaxing too.
